New Delhi sawmilling family improving profits with upgraded sawmill

Just off the main road leading through New Delhi’s timber market, Mr. Anil Kumar Singal, owner of S.S. Woodcraft, runs an efficient and highly organised sawmill, now along with help from his two sons - Sharat and Sarang - tall identical twins. They proudly produce a range of more than 70 products, many of which are on display in their showroom. He runs a Wood-Mizer LT15 sawmill, which uses thin-kerf blades to cut his teak, beech, and ash logs into accurate dimensions for making mouldings and other woodwork.

“This is a traditional family business. Our family has been in the timber business for a very long time. I don’t know exactly when they started, maybe 1,000 years ago!” Mr. Singal shares. “I have been involved in this business for the past 30 years.”

Our company philosophy is to supply good quality products to our customers and make sure they are satisfied. To maintain a good relationship with our customers and mutually benefit together. By having good quality, we ensure that our distributors never have a problem selling our product.


The sawmill is a busy place, but very clean and well organised. Everyone has a job, whether it be transporting logs, or classifying and bundling the final product for shipment and sale. “We take special care for our workers - their safety at work, health, food, drinking water, etc.” Mr. Singal shares. “We take labour welfare seriously here.”


Our logs come in from Nigeria, Ghana, Ecuador, Germany, Ivory Coast, South America and also from a few other European countries. The logs are imported, unloaded and stacked. Then logs are sent to the sawmill. Some are converted into cants. Logs suitable for beading or moulding are sawn accordingly. We then process the wood into the final product, with the desired design and size. And then we send it out to the customer.”


“We do offer our own designs. We can design the products according to the requirements of the customer. The key is quality, accuracy and proper supply to ensure 100% customer satisfaction. We sell our products all over India - from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. We don’t deal with builders directly. Rather, we mainly supply our products to end users through wholesalers, a few retailers and a very few direct customers.”


Their LT15 sawmill starts off the entire production process. All the wood they process is first broken down to size on the LT15. Their sawmill is equipped with additional bed sections that make the sawmill longer, enabling Mr. Singal’s workers to cut longer logs, or simply to increase their production level by loading two logs at a time on the bed. Boards can be offloaded from one cant while the sawmill is busy cutting the other one.


We purchased the Wood-Mizer in order to get better sawing performance, perfect timber sizes, and above else, to have a quality product,” Mr. Singal shares. “The machine works very well and is giving us a good quality surface finish. We got the Wood-Mizer because the timber waste from our traditional-style sawmill was very high when compared to the Wood-Mizer. The timber waste of the Wood-Mizer is half of the old sawmill when you compare them. The LT15 produces less sawdust compared to our traditional-style mill, which means we save a lot of timber.”


“The money invested in a Wood-Mizer can be recovered in about 2 years,” Mr. Singal continues. “Just considering the sawdust waste, provided the rest of the business is functioning properly.”


According to Bobby Joseph, country manager for Wood-Mizer in India, more and more sawmillers are following Mr. Singal’s example to improve profitability – “I have experiences with customers where they, in order to produce a 5mm thick piece, first a 10 mm piece is sawn in the traditional mill, then they use the double-side planer… then they do the sanding… which means the waste is 50%! The same customer now has purchased the Wood-Mizer Horizontal multi-head resaw, in which 6.0 mm thick sections are sawn (instead of the 10mm), then sanded and finished. Now the saving per sawn section is 4.0 mm.”

Bobby continues, sharing that last year was Wood-Mizer’s best in India so far – “The growth of Wood-Mizer in India is mainly due to some factors – 1) We give simple but effective solutions to customers, 2) The advantage we offer in terms of higher recovery, 3) The strong service backup we offer to our customers, and 4) Our blades are much cheaper per cubic metre compared with any other imported sawmill, which gives a big advantage to the customer. Per cubic metre cost is much lower, and recovery is much higher. These are aspects that customers definitely look at. And that is exactly the reason why we are growing.”

Mr. Singal shared this advice for other sawmillers and wood producers in India - “My advice to other wood businesses is to maintain customer satisfaction by understanding your customer’s needs. If you succeed in satisfying the customer by ensuring quality, on-time supply, etc., the business will grow.”
